Knowledge Base Roadmap

The following are some general thoughts about the future development of Knowledge Base. Of course, nothing is set in concrete, but it is a valuable insight into the direction Knowledge Base will probably take.

Knowledge Base Version 1

There will be at least two further major Version 1 updates with the following functional enhancements planned for inclusion:
  • Rudimentary user management and control (Optional system logon and stamping of Topics with created by and edited by information)

  • New HTML detail page type (see next bullet point)

  • Static Detail and Code pages will be replaced with a per Topic user definable page set. The user will be able to add any number of pages of the three pages types (i.e. Rich Text, HTML, and Syntax Highlighting) to a Topic (see below)

  • Convert database from DBISAM V3.x to DBISAM V4.x
Of course I am open to suggestions and comments, but inclusion of the above changes will pretty much complete everything I originally had in mind for the desktop version of Knowledge Base (bug-fixes notwithstanding).

And beyond..

After some initial brainstorming, conceptual design and prototyping, the current thinking is to release Version 2 as a more enterprise focused application. There isn't a firm feature list at this stage, but the obvious intent is to include all existing Version 1 functionality, improve on it, and to provide stronger enterprise support.

Development work will commence on Knowledge Base V2 soon, but there definitely isn't a rush to get it out, and Version 1 will be fully supported in the meantime.

Version 2 will be:
  • More enterprise focused (e.g. full user rights management)

  • Run as a Client/Server (or more likely an N-Tier RPC-based) application

  • Support several database engines, including (but not limited to) DBISAM V4, NexusDB V2, AbsoluteDB, and Firebird

  • Rich client and browser based front-ends
Make sure you contact support with any thoughts, comments or requests concerning Knowledge Base Version 2.

Knowledge Base Version 2 Pricing

Absolutely no idea at this stage, but I can promise existing users that they will be offered a very attractive deal to upgrade if/when they want to!
